This is a stunning brooch made from a vintage Swiss 17 ruby jeweled watch movement. It has been mounted on a vintage art deco style wing style base. It is a very solid piece that is truly gorgeous. The watch movement measures approximately 1/2 inch in wide. The brass wing span measures approx 2 inches wide. Some signs of aging may be present (although the findings are really quite brilliant in shine - so no worries) as this piece is well over 50 years old and will only loan to its authenticity of the era.

True one of a kind cuff links hand made from vintage typewriter. Crafted from vintage typewriter keys of the 1930-40s era. During my favorite google search, I came across the beautiful bracelet above and quickly discovered this great article on Art Deco jewellery via Ego Design. The article is en francais - and there are many other beautiful images to enjoy. It discusses a past exhibition at Les arts decoratifs...here's a bit of info from the article:

The exhibition is both a celebration of Art Deco jewellery and of the work of the jeweller and precious metalsmith Jean Després (1889-1980). 180 of this major yet little-known artist’s works, inspired by Cubism and machinery, are being shown together for the first time, alongside works by the great names of French jewellery in the 1930s: Jean Fouquet, Gérard Sandoz, Raymond Templier (all three members of the Union des Artistes Modernes), and also by architects (Robert Mallet Stevens), interior designers, (Jean Dunand) and silversmiths (Jean Puiforcat), all illustrating the formidable attraction jewellery exercised over the artists of the period.

I like the brushed elegance, the simple design. Very classic, I'd wear it everyday.

My advice on picking the perfect engagement ring

You know, I get a lot of questions about how to pick the perfect ring from a lot of my guy friends AND my girlfriends. What is reasonable to expect? What are the traditions? How much is too much? I seem to be the friend that everyone turns to on this one (I think it is the bijou obsession).

First, I think it is important to note that there is a big difference between a wedding ring and an engagement ring. Second, before buying anything you have to know what kind of ring the girl wants! I think this is the big challenge for most guys and why many just jump for Big, Expensive, and Traditional. The diamond solitaire, you would think it was the be all, end all.

So what is my advice? Well, I think the three month rule is not about money but about taking time to save and think about a big decision. I think that is important though the total is not as much. I would say that most women are happy with a ring from the heart, regardless of the pricetag.

That said, if you have a rad job and think nothing of spending 2k on a TV, it might be shitty if you spend less on a sparkler for your fiancee.

Now - most guys think that girls want that big rock. Not true, I've been there and done that - I can tell you, I found the ring SO annoying - it caught on EVERYTHING. Eventually, I just stopped wearing it. Was it big? Yes. Flashy? Definately. Did I love it? Hell no. You know, second time round did it for me.

My second engagement ring (yes, different person - that's life!) was a fraction of the cost of my first and I LOVE it because my partner picked a ring from the heart.

Now what is that? What is a ring from the heart? Well, a lot goes into a ring. First, you have to ask yourself - what style is nice? Think of how you would describe your partner, think of a movie star or an image that she appreciates. This is a good starting point. Second question - what materials? There are so many options, each with their own price points. Gold? Platinum? Well, there is a HUGE price difference between the two and most can't tell the difference. And then there is the question of a stone - diamond or other? What cut, clarity, colour? These questions are tough and really depend on the type of work your partner does (SERIOUSLY).

In my mind, a ring from the heart reflect the style of both people involved (of course, I am talking engagement here). It is a token of love, from one person to another. If you have obviously put thought into it, THAT and that alone is what will make your partner love it. Surprise is a critical engagement factor, if you surprise your partner with a ring she is going to love it wayyyy more then a ring you let her pick out.

And that leads me to my second point. A lot of my friends try to convince me that they are the type of woman that would want to pick out their own engagement ring. Seriously? In my mind, that means that woman doesn't have faith in her partners taste. I mean, if you think your partner has crappy taste then be shameless about it - send him photos, offer advice on what you like and don't like. He can't read your mind!

Finally, above all else - remember, you always have a backup plan. You can always pick a completely different wedding ring (yes!), getting two very special rings and all the options that go with that (double yes!).

My favorite route to go for wedding rings is custom all the way - forged by Csilla Ekes in the market. I love her! I have sent SO many people to her, she takes the time to get to know each couple and creates rings that match and yet are unique - best of all, they are one of a kind. Prices range depending on the style, work required, and material costs. Honestly though, I find her very comparable to traditional jewellery stores.

This brooch is made up with 2 different main layers of 0.7mm sheet silver - both sharing the same outline shape. The shape of the flower, the petals and the decorative pattern designs within petals have all been designed and composed using cad techniques. There are 8 petals in total, with every one having a different pattern. These designs have been photo etched into the silver and then enamelled with a subtle fresh colour to balance well with the multiple patterns. The top layer which is lightly satinised is strategically placed to create the right composition. An 18ct gold flower is added with an aquamarine stone to set compisition off.

Buying Jewellery - Why are some men so against it?

The other day, I met a man who told me that women desire jewellery because they are the victims of some mass marketing campaign designed to make them feel like they need it. The same person also told me that he thinks there is no point to art...I could tell that he was the kind of person that could justify buying a home stereo system and massive television 'for the family'. I'm sure he also thinks appliances are an ideal christmas present for his wife.

I understand where he is coming from though I find it really depressing. He was so resolute in his decision-making, it was evident to me that he would never be open to hearing the other side. For example - what if his wife actually likes jewellery? The ideal gift is NOT what you would want for yourself, I believe the ideal gift is based on knowing the other person and trying to understand what they desire. That is the most thoughtful gift!

I like jewellery for a lot of reasons - it's fashionable, fun, creative...I also think it is perfect to mark a special occasion - a little treasure to keep for life and maybe give to my children.

You are probably wondering what I said to this person - to be honest, I told him that I thought the marketing theory was bogus and that he was just cheap.

(and really cheap because nice jewellery doesn't have to be expensive)

If he had told me his wife didn't like jewellery, I would have had a completely different response.

Well, my dream storage solution (or jewellery box) would be a map cabinet like the one below. I am a visual person and would love to be able to lay out my collection in a way that allows me to see a whole lot all at once. So a few years ago, I outgrew the traditional jewellery boxes and have since struggled for a way to store my collection. Now, I currently use a combination of a music cabinet and watchmaker's cases from Lee Valley. The watchmaker's cases would be awesome to use if selling jewellery - I find them great for storage as they keep things from tarnishing and keep everything nice and separated.
